August gardening tips

This time of year poses questions of what can be sown and a few varieties of salad like pak choi, a type of Chinese cabbage is especially good. Radishes and rocket can also be sown until the end of this month. Vegetables show signs of being ready to be harvested usually by the leaves turning yellow and falling down.

Remember to replenish the soil when you take up plants so there's plenty of nutrients for the next plants.

  • Pinch out tomato side shoots
  • Prune raspberries and gooseberries
  • Take cuttings of shrubby herbs and tender perennials
  • Water all containers every day and feed regularly
  • Trim hedges
